Frugal Tuesday Tip

juliecacheThis is my first ever Frugal Tuesday Tip.  This tip has saved me a ton of money.  Here it is …automate your library trips.  I started this a couple of months ago.  I realize that the library is free…IF… you turn your books in on time.  We were having problems doing that.  We have 6 children who love to go to the library and check out books.  They don’t love keeping track of them.

I have an iPod with our family calendar on it.  I love having a list of things to do for the day.  My iPod and the calendar on it go with me everywhere.   I look at it several times a day.  I put “go to the library” on the calendar to repeat biweekly.  Now I see it coming up, and plan to go, every other Wednesday at 7 p.m.  It saves late fees because we take the books back when we are supposed to, but also it allows us to renew the books we already have, if we can’t find one.  Our library won’t renew late books, so the fee keeps adding up, little by little, until you turn it in, or it reaches the maximum fine of $5.00.  I would like to tell you that we have never had the maximum fee, but that would be a lie!

Planning ahead for the library and renewing misplaced books for another 2 week period has saved us money!

  1. We love love the library. I splurged (OK, it was under $2) and bought LibraryGadget because we can’t keep track of everything. My friend wrote the program – maybe your library would add the service so you can auto-renew before they come due. Thank for joining the Frugal Tuesday Tip this week.
